To be clear, Facebook is not currently being shut down nationwide in the Philippines. In August 2026, Malacañang said it was open to considering broader restrictions on digital platforms if they were found to pose serious risks to the public. The government has also been engaging Meta, Facebook’s parent company, over concerns about false and harmful content. In April, the Philippine government required Meta to implement stronger measures against false and panic-inducing content and warned of possible legal action if the company failed to respond. (PCOO)
More recently, the Palace said Facebook had been responding to government requests involving fake news and violent content, including taking down problematic posts when requested. Officials said the latest developments showed that Facebook was cooperating with the government, although discussions about stronger rules for social media platforms continue. (PCOO)
So the issue is not simply about whether Facebook should stay or go. The broader discussion involves how social media platforms should be held accountable, how harmful or deliberately false content should be addressed, and how regulation can be balanced with freedom of expression and access to information.
